Examination Office – Faculty of Law

Welcome

The Examination Office is your central point of contact for all matters related to examinations in the law program at the University of Bonn. It supports students throughout their studies by providing guidance on procedures, requirements, and formal steps connected to exams.

On this website, you will find an overview of how examinations are organized, how to register, what to do if you are unable to attend an exam, and where to find important documents. As most processes follow formal legal rules, students are expected to inform themselves carefully and in a timely manner.

Please note that this English version is intended as a general guide. As the language of instruction and examination is German, only the German version of this website is legally binding. While every effort is made to ensure that the English content is accurate and up to date, it may be incomplete or contain errors. No rights or claims can be derived from the English version. In the event of any discrepancies, only the German version shall prevail, even if the information provided here is inaccurate or outdated.

Contact

The Examination Office is usually contacted via email. When reaching out, please make sure to include your full name and matriculation number so that your request can be processed efficiently. Documents should be submitted electronically as a single PDF file. This helps ensure that your request can be handled without delays. Depending on the time of the semester, response times may vary.

If in-person visits or telephone consultations are available, the relevant times will be communicated in the announcements section. Before planning a visit, it is advisable to check for any updates.

Examinations

The Examination Office is responsible for organizing key parts of the law program, including intermediate examinations and specialized study components. It ensures that examinations are conducted in accordance with the applicable regulations.

Students are responsible for complying with all formal requirements. This includes observing deadlines, preparing the necessary documentation, and following the rules that apply during examinations.

During exams, only permitted materials may be used, and all instructions given by supervisors must be followed. Violations of examination rules can have serious consequences, including the exam being graded as failed.

Registration & Deadlines

Registering for exams is an essential step in your studies. Registration must take place within the designated periods and is generally binding once completed.

It is important to make sure that all requirements for participation have been met before registering. Missing a deadline usually means that participation in the respective exam is no longer possible.

As deadlines and procedures may change, students should always verify the exact details on the German-language website.

Withdrawal from Exams

There may be situations in which you are unable to take part in an exam. In such cases, it is important to understand the distinction between withdrawing within the deadline and withdrawing after the deadline has passed.

If you withdraw in time, no specific reason is required. After the deadline, however, withdrawal is only accepted for valid reasons, such as illness. In these cases, appropriate documentation – typically a medical certificate – must be submitted.

If a withdrawal is not properly declared or justified, the examination will usually be counted as failed. For this reason, students should act promptly and follow the required procedures carefully.

Special Accommodations

Students with chronic illnesses or disabilities have the possibility to apply for special accommodations to ensure equal conditions during examinations.

Such accommodations may include additional time, the use of assistive tools, or adjustments to the examination environment. Applications must be submitted in advance and supported by suitable documentation.

The goal is to provide fair conditions while maintaining the academic standards of the examination process.

Exam Dates

Exam dates, deadlines, and schedules are published to help students plan their studies effectively. These include written exams, coursework deadlines, and other relevant milestones.

Since examination periods are often tightly scheduled, it is important to stay informed and organize your time accordingly.

Forms & Downloads

All relevant forms and templates are provided online. These include documents for withdrawal, medical certificates and many more.

Unless stated otherwise, documents should be submitted electronically. Please ensure that all required information is complete before submission to avoid delays.

Announcements

The announcements section provides up-to-date information on any changes that may affect your studies. This can include adjustments to exam schedules, office availability, or procedural updates.

Checking this section regularly is strongly recommended, especially during examination periods.
