The Journal of the Savigny Foundation for Legal History is one of the oldest and most significant legal journals in the world. Today, it is divided into sections on Germanic, Roman, and Canon law, and has been making an important contribution to European legal historical research since its inception in 1815.
The Canon Law section, which was founded in 1911 and is thus the youngest, though equal in status to the other two sections, focuses on the intersection of church and religious history with legal history. It is published annually and edited by Prof. Dr. Mathias Schmoeckel, Prof. Dr. iur. Andreas Thier, M.A., and Prof. Dr. Heinrich De Wall.

Prof. Dr. Mathias Schmoeckel is responsible for the journal’s literature section, which publishes reviews of recent international publications by specialists in the respective fields.
