Prof. Dr. Ansgar Hense

Director of the Institute for State Church Law of the Dioceses of Germany

Ansgar Hense was born in Paderborn in 1965 and studied law in Mainz, Bayreuth, and Freiburg.

After holding positions in Cologne, Dresden, and Potsdam, he has served as director of the Institute for State Ecclesiastical Law of the Dioceses of Germany since 2010. Since 2015, Ansgar Hense has been an adjunct professor at the University of Bonn, where he teaches courses in ecclesiastical and state church law. He also holds a teaching position at Humboldt University in Berlin. 

Research Focus

  • State Church Law as an interdisciplinary field of law, including aspects of legal history and the history of ideas
  • Interest in social infrastructure law and organizational law

Memberships in professional associations, including the Vereinigung der Deutschen Staatsrechtslehrer (Association of German Constitutional Law Professors), the Deutscher Juristentag (DJT), the Juristenvereinigung Lebensrecht e.V. (Lawyers’ Association for the Right to Life), the Görres-Gesellschaft, and the Deutscher Arbeitsgerichtsverband (German Labor Court Association);

Member of the Verwaltungsrat (Board of Directors) of the KATHO (Catholic University of Applied Sciences North Rhine-Westphalia) (since 2010);

Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Insitut für Rechtspolitik (Institute for Legal Policy e.V./University of Trier) (since 2015);

Member of the Advisory Board of the Görres-Gesellschaft;

Scientific Advisor to the Forum Grenzfragen – zwischen Religion, Recht und Gesellschaft (“Forum on Borderline Issues – Between Religion, Law, and Society”) (Catholic Academy in Berlin);

In 2020, co-founder of the Experteninitiative Religionspolitik (Expert Initiative on Religious Policy EIR) — an academic-political discussion forum.

In addition to his regular lectures, Prof. Hense is also regularly invited to serve as an expert witness at parliamentary hearings.
