Profile

Erika de Wet, born 16 September 1967 in South Africa, studied law at the University of the Free State, South Africa, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Laws and a PhD. She also holds a Master of Laws from Harvard University and completed her habilitation at the University of Zurich on the topic 'The Chapter VII Powers of the United Nations Security Council' (Hart Publishing, 2004).

From 2004 to 2010, De Wet was Professor of International Constitutional Law at the Amsterdam Centre for International Law at the University of Amsterdam. From 2011 to 2015, she worked at the University of Pretoria as a Professor of International Law and as Co-Director of the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa. Subsequently (until December 2019), she was the first holder of a research professorship in International Constitutional Law at the University of Pretoria, funded by the South African National Research Foundation.

Since 2020, Erika de Wet has been a university professor of international law and head of the Institute for International Law and International Relations at the Faculty of Law of the University of Graz in Austria. She also teaches regularly at the University of Bonn as an honorary professor.

Erika de Wet has published in, among others, the American Journal of International Law, the European Journal of International Law and the Zeitschrift für Ausländisches Öffentliches Recht und Völkerrecht. She is the author of 'Military Assistance on Request and the Use of Force' (Oxford University Press, 2020) and, since October 2020, co-editor fo the Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law (Brill).
