Information for those changing from other fields
In general, students—particularly those majoring in law or economics—can transfer into the Law and Economics program. In many cases, credits earned in previous programs can be transferred toward this program.
Application Process
Applications for the Bachelor’s program in Law and Economics are submitted through the Office of Student Affairs at the University of Bonn. Admission to this program is subject to local quotas; the University of Bonn’s local admission quota applies.
Students who have already earned academic credits in the state examination program in law, in an economics program, or in another comparable program may also be eligible to apply for a higher semester.
Applications for the second and fourth semesters are accepted for the summer semester, and applications for the first and third semesters are accepted for the winter semester.
Starting with the fifth semester, the program is no longer subject to admission restrictions.
Those interested in applying for a higher semester should first contact the Office of the Dean for a placement recommendation (castle@uni-bonn.de). The application deadline for the higher semester is March 15 for the summer semester and September 15 for the winter semester. With the placement recommendation, you apply through the Student Affairs Office.

Credit Transfer and Placement Recommendation
The Law and Economics Examinations Office (Castle Office) is responsible for recognizing previously completed coursework. You can submit a request for this at any time by emailing pruefungsamt.lawecon@uni-bonn.de.
If you wish to apply for a higher semester, you must first obtain a placement recommendation from the Law and Economics Examination Office.
To do so, you must submit the following documents:
- Your transcript of grades
- A certificate of good standing
- Your faculty’s module handbook
- A certificate of internship, if applicable
You will then receive a placement recommendation from us. Please note that enrollment in the second, fourth, and sixth semesters is only possible during the summer semester. Enrollment in the first, third, and fifth semesters is only possible during the winter semester.
Credit Transfer for Students Starting in the First Semester
If you are starting in the first semester and wish to have previously completed coursework credited, you can request this credit as part of the application for admission to the Bachelor’s examination (which all students must submit during the first few weeks of their studies).
The application for admission to the Bachelor’s examination in Law and Economics can be found in the Form Center.
To have previously completed coursework credited, please use the credit transfer forms. You can also find these in the Form Center.
Please note that you must enter law coursework and economics coursework in separate registration forms.
