Preparation for the First State Examination in Law

In preparation for the First State Examination in Law (Staatsexamen), the Law Department of the University of Bonn offers a variety of courses, practice exams, and workshops. Collectively, these components comprehensively cover all compulsory material in line with § 11 Abs. 2 JAG NRW and extends over a period of two semesters.

The Revision Course for the First State Examination in Law (Repetitorium), taught by the Senior Faculty Representatives, runs from the beginning of the Winter Semester lecture period through to the end of the Summer Semester lecture period. The course is designed to provide a comprehensive review of legal knowledge, serving as in-depth revision of the exam material.

To enable a realistic self-assessment of their proficiency, students are encouraged to participate in the year-round written practice exam course for at least one academic year.

An intensive, individualized analysis of examination performance, including further guidance and advice, is provided through the Examination Clinic. Please note that prior appointments are required.

In addition, a mock exam of the written component of the First State Exam in Law is held during the lecture-free period. Students who do not yet feel confident enough to participate in this mock exam may opt for the alternative of a supervised version, which is offered in parallel.

Upon completion of the written mock exam, a mock exam of the oral component of the First State Exam in Law is offered once weekly, alternating between three legal areas: criminal, civil and public law. This begins at the start of the Winter Semester lecture period and concludes at the end of the Summer Semester lecture period.

Furthermore, students are encouraged to use this time to practice the short presentation required at the beginning of the oral examination. A dedicated seminar is offered throughout the year to prepare students for this presentation.

During the lecture-free period in September and October, sessions on recent exam-relevant judgments, together with legal didactic workshops, are also provided as part of the course.

The administrative office is currently open from Monday to Thursday and is also available to respond to telephone inquiries. Exact opening hours can be found here.
