What are key competencies?
We offer our students a variety of intensive courses designed to help them acquire key competencies that, in accordance with Section 7(2) of the North Rhine-Westphalia Legal Education Act (JAG NRW), take into account judicial, administrative, and legal advisory practice. These key competencies are interdisciplinary skills that complement legal studies with a view to future professional practice.
In our courses, you will learn in small groups, for example, how to use posture and breathing techniques to give your voice more expression, how to conduct a mediation process, negotiation strategies, and interrogation techniques.
Why should I attend these events?
For participating in our seminars, you will receive certificates of attendance. While these are not mandatory for admission to the first state law exam, they can nevertheless be included with your application. Additionally, the certificates of attendance can be attached to job applications.
Please note that almost all courses are taught in German.
Negotiation Management I
In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn how to systematically prepare for, structure, and conduct basic negotiations. Through case simulations, you will gain an understanding of how to create and leverage value during presentations, as well as how to effectively use nonverbal communication techniques during negotiations.
!!! This course is offered exclusively during the winter semester.
Since participation is free of charge for our students, but the events are funded by quality improvement funds, the following rules must be observed:
- The courses on key competencies are primarily open to major students in the Department of Law and students in the Law and Economics program. Any remaining spots may be filled by doctoral students, research assistants, and, in exceptional cases, minor students.
- Registration is always binding, and attendance is mandatory.
The workshops are announced on monitors and posters in the Juridicum as well as on the department’s Instagram account. A few days before the course begins, the binding nature of the registration will be emphasized again in a separate notice. - In the event of absence due to illness, a doctor’s note is required. Without a doctor’s note, participation in further courses will be suspended for two semesters. A doctor’s note may be submitted within one week.
- Withdrawal is only possible up to 48 hours before the course begins and must be submitted via the withdrawal portal as well as by email to zusatzangebote@jura.uni-bonn.de.

These core competency courses are reserved for students majoring in law. If any spots remain available, they may be filled by doctoral students and research assistants in the Department of Law, and, in exceptional cases, by students minoring in law.
There is no semester limit, so you can start as early as the first semester.
The key competencies specified in Section 7(2) of the North Rhine-Westphalia Law School Training Act (JAG NRW) are intended to provide students with knowledge of judicial, administrative, and legal advisory practice in addition to the standard curriculum.
Upon successful completion of a workshop, students receive a certificate of participation that can be included with job applications.
Yes, upon successful completion of a workshop, students will receive a certificate of participation after the workshop, which can be included with job applications. For intensive courses, attendance on both seminar days (Saturday and Sunday) is required.
Our key skills workshops are typically intensive sessions held over two days (e.g., Saturday and Sunday). To receive a certificate of participation, you must attend both days of the same workshop.
Please note, however, that we offer some workshops twice per semester, meaning they are the same course. You do not need to attend the same workshop again to receive the certificate.
