Specialisation Area 10: ‘Fundamentals of Law’

Student Profile
You should be keen to re-examine the premises and manifestations of legal science. An enjoyment of academic study, an interest in its role in society, and interaction with other disciplines, etc., will lead you to choose this specialisation area. No specific prior knowledge is required. However, an interest in journalism and similar fields may be helpful.

Thematic and systematic focus of the specialisation
There is no fixed curriculum, nor is the programme limited to specific areas. Rather, the emphasis is on focusing on individual questions and questioning the prevailing assumptions. Learning objectives are therefore less clearly defined. However, a certain level of general knowledge of law, including its historical, social and philosophical backgrounds, is required.

Special features of the structure of the specialisation programme
The modules do not build on one another and are generally offered annually. It is advisable to attend several seminars from as diverse a range of areas as possible. Specific seminar papers and introductory seminars are offered on a targeted basis.
Career opportunities

Possible careers that can be pursued later:

Any legal profession can be pursued with this specialisation, but also, beyond that, those professions that act as intermediaries between law and society, such as journalists, staff at foundations, political parties, etc. Whenever the aim is to reflect on the conditions of legal science, this specialisation is the right choice – and by no means limited to an academic career.

Features and key data on the specialisation
This specialisation also has a practical focus, provided this is not understood to mean direct application in the banking or insurance sectors or similar fields.

Attendance at lectures varies. Personal supervision is generally available. There are very few external lecturers.
