Prof. Dr. DDr. h.c. Matthias Herdegen

Matthias Herdegen studied law in Heidelberg and Cambridge, obtained his doctorate in 1983 and completed his habilitation in 1989. He has been a professor at the University of Bonn since 1995.

Herdegen has taught as a visiting professor in New York, Paris, Mexico City, St Gallen, Bogotá, Hong Kong and Warsaw, amongst other places, and has been awarded several honorary doctorates. He is a member of numerous national and international bodies, including the Zentrum für Europäisches Wirtschaftsrecht, the Advisory Council on Biodiversity of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Bundesakademie für Sicherheitspolitik. He has also represented the Federal Government before, amongst others, the Federal Constitutional Court, the European Court of Justice and the International Court of Justice.

Curriculum Vitae

Matthias Herdegen is a member of the Institute for Public Law and the Institute for Public International Law at the University of Bonn. He is also a member of the Zentrum für Europäisches Wirtschaftsrecht and a member of the Council of the Centre for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) at the University of Bonn.

Matthias Herdegen completed his studies at the Universities of Heidelberg and Cambridge in 1981, passing the First State Examination in law. In 1983, he obtained his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg, and he passed the Second State Examination in law in 1985. Following his habilitation in 1989, he joined the University of Bonn in 1990 as a professor of public law. The following year, he was appointed full professor at the University of Konstanz. Since 1995, Matthias Herdegen has been a professor at the University of Bonn.

Matthias Herdegen has lectured as a visiting professor at, amongst others, New York University’s Global Law School, the University of Paris I (Sorbonne), the Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM) and the University of St. Gallen (HSG), as well as serving as an honorary professor at the Pontifical Javeriana University (Bogotá). He is also an associate professor at the City University of Hong Kong and contributes to the German Law School at the University of Warsaw. The University of La Gran Colombia and the Pontifical Javeriana University have awarded him honorary doctorates in law.

Matthias Herdegen is a long-standing member of the Human Rights Committee of the International Law Association; since 2010, he has been a member of the Advisory Council on Biodiversity and Genetic Resources of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture; since 2012, he has been a member of the Sixth Advisory Council of the Bundesakademie für Sicherheitspolitik and he is a member of the parliamentary commission on parliamentary rights in relation to Bundeswehr missions abroad.

Matthias Herdegen has acted as legal representative before the Federal Constitutional Court (including on behalf of the Federal Government), the Federal Administrative Court, the European Court of Justice and the International Court of Justice.
