Stefan Greiner is a Professor of Practice and Director of the Institute for Labour Law and Social Security Law at the University of Bonn. He has held the Chair of Civil Law, Labor an Social Law since 2012. Professor Greiner's teaching and research focuses on foundational questions of German Civil Law, Labor Law and Social Security Law.

After studying law at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and passing the first State Examination in Law, Stefan Greiner earned his doctorate (Dr. iur.) from the University of Cologne in 2004 with a dissertation on the law of contractual non-performance. The doctoral thesis was awarded the Ehrhard Imelmann Prize. This was followed by his practical legal training (Referendariat) and a brief period practicing as an attorney in the employment law practice group of an international law firm. Greiner subsequently completed his habilitation—also at the University of Cologne—on a topic in collective labour law ("Legal Questions of Plurality in Freedom of Association, Collective Bargaining, and Industrial Action", 2010), receiving the formal authorization to teach (venia legendi) Civil Law, Labour Law, and Social Law. During both his doctoral and habilitation phases, Stefan Greiner worked as a research associate at the Institute for German and European Labour and Social Law at the University of Cologne, where the Managing Director, Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. Ulrich Preis, supervised both post-graduate theses.
After holding interim professorships in Jena, Bochum, and Hagen, Greiner was appointed Professor of Civil Law, Labour and Social Law at Ruhr University Bochum in 2011, before accepting a call to a chair at the University of Bonn in 2012. He declined further offers (calls) from the University of Hamburg, the EBS European Business School, and Justus Liebig University Giessen.
Professor Greiner has served on multiple occasions as an expert witness and advisor in legislative proceedings (for the German Bundestag as well as the state parliaments of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse). He regularly speaks at academic conferences and professional training events hosted by various institutions. Furthermore, he teaches at universities abroad—including regular lectures in the annual course at the School of German Law at the University of Warsaw—and is actively involved in the training of certified specialist attorneys (Fachanwaltsausbildung).
