Law and Economics in General
The Law and Economics program focuses on the intersection of law and economics. The economic analysis of law (Law and Economics) examines the impact of legal rules on human behavior. The goal is to compare the actual effects of a law with the effects intended by the legislature. This method is used to assess whether a legal norm can actually achieve the objectives it pursues. Such an assessment is always important when the creation of new norms or the interpretation of existing norms can or is intended to influence human behavior.
In this respect, the program consists of the fields of law, economics, and law and economics. In law courses, students acquire in-depth knowledge of the various core areas of law (civil, criminal, and public law) and learn how to apply legal norms to specific situations. This includes, for example, the ability to draft legal opinions. In addition, there are foundational economics courses in mathematics, statistics, and microeconomics. In the bridge courses in law and economics, students learn how economic methodology is applied to legal issues.
Why study Law and Economics in Bonn?
At the Faculty of Law and Political Science, there has never been a separation of law and economics, whereas other universities decided decades ago to transfer economics to separate faculties.
Recent developments in the field of law and economics, which bring both disciplines together, vindicate the University of Bonn’s decision to maintain this connection. In this respect, students and research benefit from a particularly close integration of both disciplines, which fully meets today’s demands for interdisciplinarity and interconnectedness.
In particular, the wide range of extracurricular activities makes Bonn a unique place to study.
