The Institute for State Church Law of the Dioceses of Germany is not a department within the Faculty of Law and Political Science, but rather a research institution of the Association of German Dioceses, which acts as the legal entity of the German Bishops’ Conference.

Founded in 1970 by the German bishops, the Institute deals with the fundamentals of ecclesiastical law in both academic research and practical application. This includes, in particular, a thorough examination of the historical, current, and future relationship between state and church, not least in its context within European law.

In addition, one of the Institute’s core tasks is to provide extensive expert advice on issues of ecclesiastical and state-church law for (arch)dioceses and church organizations.
