What do I have to do in the main degree programme?
You are free to organise your course of study as you wish; here we show you the components of the main study programme:
Gain an overview:
- In the curriculum recommendation you can get an overview of the lectures still to be heard.
- In our lecture descriptions you can also find out about the content of the various lectures.
- In the course overview you can see in which semester which events normally take place.
- In the course catalogue on Basis you will find all courses (lectures, study groups etc.) that are being held in the current semester.
- You will also findoptions for further study planning here.
Components of the main study programme:
- The large advanced exercieses, which you must pass in each core dogmatic subject (three written examinations and a term paper). You will learn to link the individual subject areas of the subjects.
- The compulsory internship in administration and the administration of justice (more detailed information can be found below).
- The proseminar as an introduction to academic work and as preparation for the subsequent seminar paper.
- The specialisation area study programme offers you the opportunity to acquire in-depth knowledge in one of our 12 specialisation areas (more detailed information can be found below).
- Opportunity for voluntary language training through the Bonn FFA-programme and other foreing language courses offered by the department.

- The specialisation can be completed both before and after the compulsory state examination.
The compulsory internship is an admission requirement for the compulsory state examination. The practical study period must be completed during the lecture-free period. It must be completed for at least four weeks in the administration of justice or in a company in the private sector, at least four weeks in an organisation entrusted with administrative tasks and a maximum of four weeks at an organisation of your choice that guarantees appropriate training. The practical study period must total 12 weeks.

Important note: Section 12 JAG NRW (graduation) will be repealed by the Second Act Amending the Lawyers' Training Act of 9 November 2021.
Section 12 JAG continues to apply to students who have already registered for the compulsory state examination or who register within three years of the Second Act Amending the Lawyers‘ Training Act coming into force (see Art. 2 para. 2 Second Act Amending the Lawyers’ Training Act). It is therefore still possible to register for graduation up to and including 16 February 2025.
