CENTRE FOR MEDICAL DATA USABILITY AND TRANSLATION (ZMDT)

Legal solutions for medical innovation — interdisciplinary and practice-oriented.

The ZMDT

As an inter-faculty centre at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, we see ourselves as a link between the Faculties of Law and Political Science, Medicine, and Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

The centre brings together experts from various disciplines. For us, interdisciplinary collaboration is not the exception but part of our everyday practice – enabling us to develop innovative solutions that bridge the gap between theory and practice. This generates new impetus for research, teaching and societal application – in a cross-disciplinary, forward-looking and effective manner.

The focus is always on reconciling data protection with the usability of (medical) data – whilst taking into account technological progress, the current legal framework and recent legal developments, as well as the necessary level of social acceptability.

Profile and objectives of the centre

Our mission is

to strengthen access to medical data and its use in scientific research and clinical practice

through

science-based legal support for medical projects as well as by helping to shape and evaluate regulations relating to innovation

with the aim of

enabling and promoting innovation in the field of medical data within the existing legal framework while safeguarding constitutional rights.

Innovation Taxi

We offer expert, science-based legal support for medical innovation projects, including guidance on the GDPR, EHDS, BDNG, GDNG, MDR and the AI Regulation.

Interdisciplinary teaching

We hold interdisciplinary seminars and lectures in the fields of data and data protection law, focusing, amongst other things, on the relevant regulatory framework in healthcare and research.

Interdisciplinary research

Our research focuses in particular on current legal barriers, ongoing legal developments, and future legal frameworks and interpretations designed to promote innovation.

Dialogue on Science Policy

As an academic hub for the science and policy communities, we promote a dynamic exchange of knowledge and make scientifically sound contributions to the development and evaluation of regulations relating to innovation.
