Study Group Support
The Study Group Support handles all inquiries regarding registration for the working groups (AGs) offered by the Faculty.
Please note the following general guidelines:
Registration for study groups (AGs): Registration for AGs must be completed exclusively online and independently via BASIS. Only FFF students, Erasmus students, and students admitted from the waiting list should contact AG Support directly.
Changing AGs: During the registration period, you can make changes to your registration yourself at any time via BASIS. As a rule, subsequent changes outside the registration periods cannot be made by AG Support and are only possible in exceptional cases of particular hardship.
Deregistering from an AG: If you no longer wish or are unable to participate in an AG, you should deregister from the AG yourself via BASIS by the end of the lecture period. This will prevent the AG from being recorded as “failed” in BASIS, and you are welcome to register for the respective AG again in a later semester.
Registration periods winter semester 2026-27
You can register for an AG at any time during the entire registration period. The so-called “first come, first served” principle no longer applies, meaning that the time at which you register has no influence on whether you are allocated a place. Only after the registration period has ended will AG places be allocated by lottery, taking into account the priorities indicated in BASIS.
The registration period for AGs runs from September 21, 2026, to October 7, 2026, via BASIS.
The allocation of AG places will take place on October 8, 2026.
If you decide during the semester that you no longer wish to attend an AG, you can deregister from the AG yourself via BASIS at any time up until the end of the lecture period.
Here you'll find detailed instructions and FAQs about registration.
FAQ
Instructions on how to register for study groups via BASIS can be found on the BASIS-Wiki for students.
In working groups, the methodology of case study in civil law, public law, and criminal law is taught and practiced on the basis of the content presented in the lectures. Your study group will be marked as “passed” by the working group leaders at the end of the semester, provided that you have attended at least three-quarters of all sessions (§ 5 II 2 StudO 2023).
Successful participation in the study groups is a prerequisite for writing the course-related term papers! Students in the state examination program in law require at least one successfully recorded working group in each area of law (civil law, criminal law, and public law) in order to be allowed to write the corresponding term papers. As part of the basic studies, a term paper on BGB AT and a term paper on Criminal Law III or IV must be written (a prerequisite for participation in the term paper in criminal law is, for example, successful participation in the working group “Criminal Law I” or “Criminal Law II”). During the main study period, the term paper on the advanced exercise in public law must be written (the prerequisite for participation is a successfully completed seminar certificate for “Constitutional Law I,” “Constitutional Law II,” or “Administrative Law”).
For students studying a minor subject, successful participation in a study group is a prerequisite for various written examinations which, according to the respective module plan, require participation in a study group.
Every student has the right to a spot in a study group, but not in a specific one. If you could not get a spot in the regular registration period, please contact the AG Support. We will appoint you a spot in a study group that still has remaining capacities.
For organizational reasons, a switch between students is not possible.
- during the registration period a switch by cancellation and re-registration is possible on your own via BASIS.
- after the registration period a switch is generally not allowed. It is only possible in special hardship cases. Commuting or conflicts with a part-time job do not constitute as a special hardship case. The program of law is a full time study programm that must be completed in site. Therefore, you must remain in the study group you have chosen or inform the Study Group Support team and your tutor of your withdrawal from the group.
The automatic synchronization between Basis and eCampus does not occur immediately, but only on certain dates and after the start of the semester, so no action is required. Please be patient. If you are still unable to access eCampus after a longer period of time, please contact the Study Group Support.
If there are no more places available in every study group within a subject, individual participation capacities may be increased. However, please register for your courses independently via Basis as long as there are still groups with free places. There is no guarantee that you will later be assigned to a preferred group.
Please contact the Study Group Support team with your desired group. We will take care of it.
The registration for study groups is not possible, if you have already participated successfully.
No! The permission of the tutor does not replace the official study group registration on BASIS. Tutors have no influence on the participants of their study group.
No! The repeat study groups are a voluntary offer from the department of law. Therefore, there is no individual right to a place.
No! Access to the eCampus materials is only possible if your are registered for the group on BASIS.
If you want to register for study groups from the law programm you can contact us (the study group support). If you want to register for the LawEcon study groups, please contact CASTLE.
Starting with the winter semester 2025–26, there will no longer be any printed “AG certificates” in paper form. In future, successfully attending a study group (AG) will be recorded in BASIS as “Passed.” The online recording will replace the previous AG certificate. As a student, please always check your AG record in BASIS at the end of the lecture period and, if necessary, contact the respective AG instructor. Previously issued AG certificates will remain valid; however, they will not be entered into the digital system retroactively.
