Völkerrecht III - "International Security Law and the Law of Armed Conflicts" (Recht der internationalen Sicherheit und der bewaffneten Konflikte)

This advanced course in public international law will be taught in English. The final exam can be written in either English or German.

The course "Völkerrecht III - International Secuirty Law and the Law of Armed Conflicts [Recht der internationalen Sicherheit und der bewaffneten Konflikte]" (SPB 6 and 8 [old], SPB XI [new]) is an advanced course in public international law exploring both the jus ad bellum and the jus in bello. In the first part, the lectures will examine the international law on the use of force, that is, the collective security system under the United Nations Charter, the right to individual and collective self-defence, the concepts of humanitarian intervention and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). In the second part the lectures will deal with the distinction between international, non-international and internationalized armed conflicts and the applicable rules in these conflicts. The third part of the lectures will examine the rules govering the conduct of actual hostilities and the occupation of foreign territory.
